Details

The Players: high-ranking religious leaders of different faiths in mixed teams. The Referee: Police Inspector General Ernest Mangu together with Dar es Salaam’s director of the Regional-Commission Said Meck Sadick and Special Zone Commissioner Suleiman Kova. The guest of honor: Tanzania's Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda!

The Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation Tanzania supports the initiative of the interreligious Dar es Salaam Peace Committees to jointly set a strong signal of peace and solidarity through the interreligious football match. The match will take place immediately before an international match of the Tanzanian National Team "Taifa Stars" against the National Team of Benin. Thousands of spectators in the stadium and many more at the screens at home are expected.

The two teams, supported by a German trainer team from KAS Tanzania, have already started their training. The encountered Teams are well mixed: Dar es Salaam’s Regional Sheikh Alhad Salum (among others) is playing together with Bishop Malasusa, head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, the Deputy Mufti Sheikh Abubakar Zuberi and the chairman of the Bishops' Conference Philemon Tibananason (all playing for Amani Sports Club). The opposing team consists of Mufti Sheikh Ismail Makusanya, the chairman of Dar Churches Union, Pastor Amon Lyimo, Deputy Kadhi, Sheikh Muhidin Mkoyogore and Bishop Valentino Mokiwa of the Anglican Church (all playing for Mshikamano Sports Club). (Complete list in English below).

The Interfaith Peace Committee hopes to strengthen awareness, especially of the young Tanzanian citizens, that peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, tolerance and cooperation across religious boundaries are possible and necessary. In the press release, the Committee appeals to the younger generation to actively work for peace and tolerance. All Tanzanians are cordially invited to support and cheer for the two teams. Who wins in the end is irrelevant. The reason for this event is to spread the message of peace, tolerance, solidarity and cooperation among Tanzanians of different faiths.

By the way: For those who cannot wait until kick-off, you are welcome to watch the religious leaders in training. Next training is on 04th October 2014 at 07.00 o’clock in the Karume Stadium Upanga.
