Symposium
Details
On 18 February 2014 the just appointed Constituent Assembly shall start their meeting in Dodoma to discuss the second draft of the new Tanzanian Constitution. If the 641 members from civil society, Bunge and the Zanzibar House of Representatives reach an agreement within the prescribed period of 70 to a maximum of 110 days, the Tanzanian population will in a next step be called upon to legitimize the new constitution in a referendum. To ensure that first time voters know their rights and responsibilities in this process and are able to make decisions, they must be informed about constitutionalism itself as well as on the content and criticisms of the draft.
Therefore the Civics Education Teachers’ Association (CETA) in cooperation with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Tanzania will on the 13th and 14th of February host a symposium for students and teachers at the National Museum in Dar es Salaam.
On the first day of the event about 100 selected teachers from secondary schools in the Dar es Salaam Region are invited to share their experiences with Professor Abdallah Safari, who is a member of the Constituent Assembly. The professor will give input and support to the teachers.
The second day shall give room to 250 students from secondary schools and universities to share their ideas, to comment and to seek clarification on the constitutional making process. Mr Harold Sungusia from the Legal and Human Rights Center (LHRC) and Mr Daniel Welwel, a lawyer from Dar es Salaam are expected to inform the new generation of voters on their rights, roles and duties in the registration process as well as the referendum itself.
Participation is on personal invitation only.
