Specialist conference
Details
Issues of climate change, economic justice and communities living peacefully together are of concern to all of us. These are challenges we can address only if we act together. Especially religious leaders can, due to their function as role models for their followers influence the behaviour of a big part of the population positively. This is an opportunity that should not be wasted.
Therefore about 60 representatives of religious communities in various countries in sub-saharan Africa are expected to travel to Dar es Salaam to enrich the three-day conference with their expertise and experience. The aim of the event is to identify ways in which religious and political leaders can strengthen active citizenship and thereby contribute to peace, democracy and sustainable development. The ojectives of the event are (1) to explore the constitutional framework that guarantees citizenship rights, (2) to strengthen practices of good governance and democracy, to (3) highlight poverty alleviation as precondition for peace and development and to (4) analyze tensions between different communities and promote tolerance. As an overall result a joint call from religious leaders shall be issued.
During the dialogue, renown scholars are expected to present papers reflecting on five different panels, namely “National Constitutions and the Freedom of Religion in Africa”; “Current Developments in Christian - Muslim Relations in Africa”; “Religious Leaders for Democracy and Good Governance”; “Poverty Alleviation - A Precondition for Peace and Development”; and “Creating an Infrastructure for Peace: Successful Interfaith Initiatives”.
His Excellency the Union Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal is expected to officiate the event as Chief Guest.
This Interfaith Dialogue is an opportunity for religious leaders to meet up, share concerns, hear each others’ points of view and acknowledge their shared values. The forum shall connect people of various cultures and faiths and provide them with the opportunity to exchange experiences which shall be used to support the joint task of strengthening peace, religious tolerance, democracy and sustainable development in Africa and beyond.
