This booklet outlines five key models for governor elections and examines their impact on decentralization and local governance. Readers will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of each model, as well as the perspectives of stakeholders at both local and national levels. Policy makers and local administrators, in particular, will benefit from understanding public demands for greater provincial self-governance and the various ways they can represent their constituents more effectively.
The five models presented are based on action research conducted in 2023 through workshops with local administrators, academics, and the Thai public. This research was led by the Promotion of Local Administration Foundation (PLAF) with support from KAS.
In this second edition, we incorporate feedback and opinions gathered from public seminars held in four provinces in 2024, where the five models were presented for discussion. Participants—including politicians, local administrators, civil society members, community representatives, private sector actors, and entrepreneurs—shared their perspectives and preferences.
