KAS Thailand, IDS and KPI organized the event “Reimagine Smart City Policy Framework to Next Future" on 21 March 2023. It was discussed that Smart Cities are not limited to technology, but require public engagement and democracy and need to address the issues of the people of Thailand. Thus, the role of local administration should be intensified and decentralization pushed.

Policy Recommendations

  • Smart City concepts require initiation on a local level, therefore local administration needs to be strengthened and decentralization expanded.
  • Support and development tools for a Smart Economy: an improved QR-payment or Promptpay system would lift the ease and connection between customers and merchants to another level.  
  • Develop an Innovative-City-Index listing of Smart Cities in Thailand – so non-smart cities in Thailand can learn from their approach.  
  • Encourage public engagement so people can participate in the decision-making process and are motivated to become Smart Citizens.
  • Amend laws to allow and authorize local administration to work on Smart City concepts.
