N-Ost Media conference 2017

From 5th to 7th October 2017, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung supported an international media conference, organized by the NGO N-Ost (Berlin), that gathers journalists from over 20 countries, who write about Eastern Europe. The main question of this year’s conference was, which topics media and society overlook, the so called blind spots.

Over 120 journalists, editors and media analysts from Ukraine, Germany and other European countries gathered in Kyiv to define the most important topics and population groups, which are overlooked by media. Furthermore they treated reasons and consequences, which might cause this overlooking.

During the conference the participants identified several current Ukrainian topics, which are overlooked, such as: the people’s life in the occupied areas, Donbass and Crimea, problems of internally displaced people in Ukraine, the reintegration of ATO-veterans into society, criticizing the actions of governmental authorities, ignoring journalistic standards when reporting about acts of war etc. The conference paid big attention to the fact that now – after a long period of time, in which international media barley took notice of Ukraine and a following highly increasing international interest due to the dramatic events between 2013 and 2015 – Ukraine became practically invisible again for European media.

Within the frame of the conference four plenary sessions and over a dozen workshops took place, most of them simultaneously organized on the terrain of the IZONE.
