We are pleased to present Trade Winds and Tides: Responding to Climate Challenges Through Enhanced Food Accessibility in the Arab Mediterranean, a collaborative effort between the Regional Program Energy Security and Climate Change Middle East and North Africa of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS-REMENA) and the Lebanese Citizen Foundation (LCF).

The Arab Mediterranean region faces mounting challenges to food security at the intersection of climate change, geopolitical tensions, and evolving trade dynamics. With limited arable land, scarce water resources, and a heavy reliance on food imports, countries in this region are particularly vulnerable to external shocks. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of how these challenges are shaping the region’s food security and proposes actionable strategies to enhance resilience and accessibility.

The study spans nine areas—Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, and Syria—examining their unique socio-economic contexts while identifying shared vulnerabilities and opportunities. By evaluating the four pillars of food security—availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability—the research highlights the critical need for inclusive, sustainable solutions, especially for marginalized and vulnerable populations.

One of the study’s key focuses is the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus, an interconnected framework essential for understanding how disruptions in water or energy resources cascade through food production and ecosystems. Additionally, it examines regional and bilateral trade agreements to assess their impact on food security and explore opportunities for climate-resilient re-alignments.
