CONFERENCE ON CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM PROCESSES IN TANZANIA AND KENYA

KAS-Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa in collaboration the Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies [TGCL] and KAS-Tanzania organized a one-day conference on “Constitutional Reform Processes in Tanzania and Kenya” on 24th of May 2013 at the University of Dar es Salaam.

The forum offered an opportunity to the participants to discuss and share lessons and experiences on constitution reform processes in Kenya and Tanzania in particular and the East African region in general.

The forum was officially opened by the German Ambassador to Tanzania, H.E. Klaus-Peter Brandes. Hon. Justice (Rtd) Damian Lubuva, Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Tanzania delivered the key note speech.

Other key speakers included Ms Catherine Mumma a commissioner with the Commission on the Implementation of the Constitution of Kenya (CIC) who presented on the topic entitled 'Implementing the Constitution of Kenya 2010- lessons for upcoming constitutions in Africa';Prof. Gamaliel Mgongo Fimbo; Prof. Bonaventure Rutinwa who presented on the topic entitled ‘Constitutionalizing Citizenship in Tanzania: Experiences from other East African States’; and Prof. Hamudi Ismail Majamba who presented on the topic entitled ‘Environmental Protection and Constitutional Reform in East Africa: Lessons for Tanzania’.

Among the key discussants were representatives of the civil society in Tanzania. The conference was moderated by Prof. Hartmut Hamann, of the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany and officially closed by Mr. Peter Wendoh, the Project Advisor, KAS-Rule of Law Program for Sub Saharan Africa.
