Political Dialogue New Zealand/Australia. Part 1: Wellington

From February 4th to February 7th a high-level delegation of the Christian Democratic Union Party (CDU) from Germany and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung led by Dr Klaus Schüler, Federal Director of the Christian Democratic Union Party, together with Dr Gerhard Wahlers and Frank Priess is visiting New Zealand to foster the dialogue with policymakers and think tanks and to develop existing ties with the political parties partnering with the CDU.

The delegation consists of Dr Klaus Schüler, Federal Director of the Christian Democratic Union Party, together with Dr Gerhard Wahlers, Deputy Secretary General of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and Head of the Department European and International Cooperation of KAS, and Frank Priess, Deputy Head of the Department European and International Cooperation of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Regional Programme Political Dialogue Asia and Pacific based in Singapore under the direction of Dr Beatrice Gorawantschy has organised a series of lectures and expert talks in Wellington, Syndey, Canberra and Melbourne in collaboration with New Zealand and Australian partners.

In Wellington the delegation met among others Minister The Hon. Christopher Finlayson (Cabinet Minister and Attorney General of New Zealand, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations and Responsible for the Government Communications Security Bureau and the Minister in Charge of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service) in the residence of German Ambassador Dr Anne-Marie Schleich. With the National Party being the partner of the Democratic Christian Union in the International Democratic Union (IDU), bilateral relations as well as current challenges of both parliaments were discussed with MP Lindsay Tisch, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairperson of the New Zealand – Germany Friendship Group in Parliament. Political campaigning, communication strategies and organizing political parties in New Zealand and Germany were the focus of the meetings with the National Party President Peter Goodfellow and National Party’s Secretary Greg Hamilton. The exchange with Wayne Eagleson, Chief of Staff of PM John Key, was intended to tighten international party relations within the IDU. Furthermore Dr Klaus Schüler gave a keynote speech on strategic challenges in Germany and Europe during a luncheon discussion – KAS’ first joint event with the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs. Meeting with representatives of the Pacific Development Division and the International Development Group of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs the delegation put additional focus on New Zealand’s activities in the South Pacific area.
