Since February 24, 2022 at the latest, destruction and suffering have become a sad daily routine for many people in Ukraine. But war is not a legal vacuum. International (criminal) law provides rules and answers for times of war and crisis.

The interview with Dr. Donald Riznik, Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Public Law and International Law at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich, deals with crimes under international law and ways to prosecute them. It looks at terms such as war crimes and genocide, which often appear in connection with Ukraine in the media. It also explains what the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice are responsible for and what role the national courts play in international criminal prosecution. Current developments such as the decision by the International Court of Justice in the case Ukraine against Russia and the question of setting up a special tribunal for Ukraine are also discussed. Finally, questions about the role of the United Nations and their options for action in Ukraine will be answered.
