Welcome to Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Baltic states!

Freedom, justice and solidarity are the basic principles underlying the work of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). KAS is a political foundation, closely associated with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). As co-founder of the CDU and the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) united Christian-social, conservative and liberal traditions. His name stands for the democratic reconstruction of Germany, the anchoring of foreign policy in a

transatlantic community of values, the vision of European unification and the orientation towards the social market economy. His intellectual legacy continues to be both a task and an obligation for us.

With our European and international cooperation, we are committed to ensuring that people can live self-determined lives in freedom and dignity. We make a value-orientated contribution to ensuring that Germany lives up to its growing responsibility in the world.

We want to encourage people to help shape the future in this spirit. With more than 70 offices and projects in over 120 countries worldwide, we make an independent contribution to promoting democracy, the rule of law and a social market economy. In order to secure peace and freedom, we support continuous dialogue on foreign and security policy as well as exchange between cultures and religions.

At the heart of our work is people and their distinctive dignity, rights and duties. For us, they are the starting point for social justice, liberal democracy and sustainable economic activity. By bringing together people who accept their social responsibility, we develop active networks in politics, business and society. Our political knowledge management improves the chances of shaping globalisation in a socially just, ecologically sustainable and economically efficient way.

We cooperate with governmental institutions, political parties, civil society organizations and selected elites. Through our goals and values, we want to deepen political cooperation regionally and globally in the future, especially in development policy. Together with our partners, we contribute to an international order that enables every country to develop in freedom and on its own responsibility.

Objectives and priorities of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in the Baltic States:

With its advisory and educational measures in the Baltic countries, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation contributes to the training and further education of political functionaries and mandate holders as well as to the stabilisation of the party systems. Furthermore, even after the accession of the Baltic states to the EU and NATO, we promote the development of information on political goals and institutions within the Euro-Atlantic structures. This includes strengthening our local partners to develop their own initiatives and actively participate in the foreign and security policy dialogue in the EU and NATO to secure peace on Europe's eastern external border.

We also contribute to transferring the experience of the Baltic countries in building democratic and constitutional structures to neighbouring countries in the sense of the "democracy export". The central approach of our work lies in maintaining contacts and networking with and between politicians, decision-makers, but also policy-related advisory institutes and academic institutions. Furthermore, we are trying to foster the exchange of expertise and experience between Germany and the Baltic States.

The project activities of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in the Baltic states are coordinated by the regional Offices in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. The director is located in Riga, Latvia.
