The event was opened by Osman Mohiadin Moallim, Chairperson of Somalia Civil Society and Executive Director of SONSA, alongside Nils Woermer, Director of RP SIPODI East Africa. In his remarks, Mr. Woermer welcomed the collaboration with SONSA, expressing gratitude for their efforts in fostering dialogue and addressing critical issues. He also introduced Dr Ellinor Zeino, Director of the KAS Country Office Türkiye and thanked her for accepting to take part in the dialogue.
The discussion comprised of three panels. The first panel assessed the strategic partnership between Somalia and Türkiye highlighting the Turkish model of international cooperation, and how it aligns with Somalia’s strategic goals. It was emphasized during the discussion that for Somalia, adopting aspects of the Turkish model could imply utilizing state-led growth strategies and fostering infrastructure development, yet risks may include entrenching authoritarian governance practices if democratic principles are sidelined.
The second panel analysed Somalia’s regional positioning and the merits of its membership to the East African Community (EAC). Panellists contended that Somalia had much to gain from the EAC in terms of trade, infrastructure, security and strengthening political ties. However, it was noted these gains stand to be undermined by regional tensions such as the maritime dispute between Kenya and Somalia.
The third panel explored Somalia’s preparedness in relation to the upcoming national elections and the regional impacts this carries. The panellists noted that the process was not transparent, and it has severed relations between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS). They however welcomed the new leadership of the African Union Commission (AUC), highlighting the critical role the AUC has to play in the stabilisation of Somalia.
The event was concluded with a summary of the key outcomes of the discussion. The platform provided a timely avenue for stakeholders which included, government officials, civil society and researchers, to engage in constructive dialogue and forge a collective partnership with regional and international actors.
