The process to draft a new democratic Constitution is being done in a swift manner by the newly elected Constituent Assembly (CA). It is expected that a primary draft will be ready by Feb. 2010 and the final Constitution will be “given by the people to the people” by April 2010. In this context, the Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), Kathmandu together with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) feels that further inputs are required to the CA by the representatives of the civil society, think-tanks, INGOs through deliberations and suggestions as it moves into fulfilling this historical task. One of the crucial issues for the CA at the moment is to define ‘national interest’, articulate it for the purpose of securing a stable polity for the country as well as exploring economic, cultural, foreign policy, national security and other dimensions whilst discussing ‘national interest’ of the New-Nepal and also place it as one of the Directive Principles of the state in the new Statute.
