Poster of the MiDAS-KAS conference 2022 - regional terrorism challenges and counter violent extremism perspectives

Amidst the pandemic, superpower competitions and the political situation in Europe, terrorism remains a thorny issue and still requires serious attention. While trends in radicalisation, terrorist operations and attacks from previous years seem to continue, reports have shown that terrorists are taking advantage of the pandemic. In addition, analysts argued that the recent development in Afghanistan has repercussions on counter-terrorism. Equally important, we need to anticipate future possible terrorist threats in terms of the rise of the far-right extremism, bioterrorism and increased reliance on the internet from being exploited by terrorists.

Terrorism remains a concern for Malaysia. The Defence White Paper (DWP) identified terrorism as part of the non-traditional threat that could not be ignored. The DWP stressed the whole Government and Society approaches in dealing with recent trends of terrorism. It also highlighted the importance of bilateral engagement in countering terrorism with several countries, including Germany.

The mode of the conference will be hybrid. Participants may attend the conference physically, through limited invitations only, or participate online.
