Nuclear arms control and non-proliferation are central pillars of the international security architecture and global peace. In a world confronted with the potentially catastrophic effects of nuclear weapons, this programme developed by KAS Vienna, in cooperation with Atomic Reporters aims to promote a deeper understanding and effective management of these pressing issues.
The programme commenced with engaging discussions where participants interacted with experts and diplomats on a broad spectrum of topics related to nuclear power and weapons. Discussions ranged from the complexities of arms control stability, nuclear deterrence to exploring the implications of AI in nuclear command, control, and communication. In addition to addressing issues such as nuclear arms control, non-proliferation, and disarmament, the Study Programme also focused on acquainting participants with prominent Vienna-based institutions involved in the research and verification of nuclear material usage. Notable visits were organized to institutions like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). A highlight of the programme was the visit to the IAEA on the second day, offering participants an experience to deepen their understanding of nuclear safety. The visit underscored the critical roles played by IAEA Safeguards and CTBTO in ensuring global nuclear security. The programme concluded with a visit to the IAEA Safeguards and Nuclear Applications Laboratories in Seibersdorf on the final day. This visit provided a unique opportunity for participants to engage directly with field experts, gaining practical insights into the diverse applications of nuclear technology and the ongoing advancements in nuclear science.
