Study and information programme

“This Isn’t A New Weapon, It’s A New World.” Niels Bohr breaks down the impact of the creation of the bomb in the movie "Oppenheimer" by explaining that building the atomic bomb won't just change the military capabilities of the US, but it will permanently change the world. Seventy-nine years after the birth of the nuclear weapons age, the planet continues to be haunted by the threat of their use. While nuclear weapons drew little attention and concern during the decades after the end of the Cold War, Russia’s implicit and explicit nuclear threats in its war against Ukraine have re-emphasised the dangers and risks of the nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons remaining in the arsenals of nine countries. The Doomsday Clock, a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to global catastrophe caused by man-made technologies, identifies an undiminished nuclear threat and a new arms race as one of the main reasons why it is only 90 seconds to midnight.
To bridge a knowledge gap, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Vienna, together with Atomic Reporters are inviting members of a generation who came of age after the end of the Cold War to take part in a three-day Study Programme in Vienna from 2nd to 6th of July 2024.
