"The Unilateral Declaration of Independence of Kosovo"

What can the Palestinians learn from the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo? Which parallels can be found between the cases of Kosovo and the Palestinian Autonomous Territories? Should the developments that took place in the Balkan states of the past twenty years really be taken for a role model? It was these questions that motivated most listeners to attend the lecture of Prof. Christophe Martin.

The lecture took place as a part of the lecture series Legal Encounter which is based on the cooperation between the Institute of Law (IoL) of Birzeit University and the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS) Ramallah. On May 5, 2010 Prof. Jean-Christophe Martin of the Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis held his lecture on "The Unilateral Declaration of Independence of Kosovo".

Prof. Martin provided his listeners with an extensive insight into the relevant aspects of international law and the intrastate preconditions for the unilateral declaration of a state. Both issues were met with great interest by the audience which was mainly composed of students and university lecturers of political science, law, and history. Finally, however, one central question remained unanswered – whether the complex conflict regions of Southeast Europe and the Middle East are similar enough for both to require the same conflict solution.

By supporting the lecture series, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation Ramallah encourages the establishment of rule of law in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories.
