In the wake of the political re-alignment in Kenya in the run-up to the forthcoming general elections, the first under the new constitutional dispensation, and in recognition of the important role of the youth and women in Kenyan politics in the years to come, the rule of law program engaged young aspiring political leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) and the newly formed United Democratic Forum (UDF) to find out their respective political parties take as well as their own personal take on the place and role of the rule of law in the Kenyan politics and society as a whole, particularly under the new constitutional dispensation.
All the participants were in agreement that the respect for the rule of law by all was non-negotiable if the economic development and social stability of the country is to be realized and sustained. As young aspirants, they pledged to do all it takes to uphold the rule of law and ensure full implementation of the constitution for the common benefit of the people of Kenya both at the personal level and within their respective political party structures.
Among those in attendance were Ms Nancy Abisai, member of the National Executive Committee of ODM and Deputy Secretary of Women Affairs of the party; Mr. Isaac Mwaura, member of the National Executive Committee of ODM and Advisor to the Prime Minister (Hon. Raila Odinga) on Human Rights and People with Disabilities Affairs; Mr. Sande Oyolo, Executive Director, United Democratic Forum (UDF) whose presidential candidate is Hon. Musalia Mudavadi and who is the current Deputy Prime Minister; and Ms Mercy Gakuya, National Secretary of Young Democrats of DP.
