The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Foundation under the aegis of the Rule of Law Program for Sub Saharan Africa organised a two-day workshop in Nairobi for a team of experts on international criminal justice drawn from across Africa to interrogate, deliberate and assess the progression of the international criminal justice from an African perspective.
The team which forms KAS’ African Experts Study Group on International Criminal Justice reviewed the general progress made since inception in 2010 as well as the articles that were published by the old members of the group in the maiden report that was launched in Brussels, Belgium this month (October 2012).
Similarly, the group discussed the concept note for 2012/2013 and reviewed the various abstracts that had been submitted touching on array of issues ranging from the impact of the International Criminal Court on the Continent from the perspective of the fight against impunity; justice for victims; impact on peace, reconciliation and stability in the situation countries among others.
The group also had an opportunity to meet with Mrs Fatou Bensouda, the ICC Chief Prosecutor who is on official visit to Kenya to brief her on the work of group. On her part, the Chief Prosecutor briefed members of the group the objective of her visit to Kenya specifically but also updated them on the operations of the court in general. Those in attendance during the discussions included, Phakiso Mochochoko, Head of the Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division; Mr. Xavier-Jean Keita, Principal Counsel -Office of Public Counsel for the Defence and member of the KAS African Experts Group; Prof. Christian Roschmann, Director of the Rule of Law Program; Mrs Oby Nwankwo the Executive Director, Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC), Nigeria and Member of the International Steering Committee, Coalition on the International Criminal Court (CICC) New York and also a member of KAS African Experts Group, among others.
