Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Türkiye 6th Media Dialogue Forum
From 9 to 11 October 2024, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Türkiye hosted a media dialogue forum entitled ‘Bridging Divides: Geopolitical Dynamics and Media Narratives’.
First of all, a big thank you to all Turkish and German journalists as well as all international correspondents in Türkiye who enriched our discussions with their insights and experiences!
The forum comprised a series of panels followed by discussions:
- From Polarisation to Normalisation: Can the Kültürkampf be Contained? The first panel explored the cultural conflicts in Türkiye and possible paths to normalisation.
- Europe During Pivotal Elections: Does the Centre Hold? Participants analysed how key elections across Europe influence political dynamics within the EU and beyond.
- Polarity, Multipolarity, Solidarity: Frameworks of Geopolitical Shifts This panel took the geopolitical situation as an opportunity to debate media frameworks of related changes.
- Between Fake and Facts: Migrants and Migration in Turkish and German Media This panel focussed on the portrayal of migration issues in the media and their impact on public perception.
- Politicisation of Sports: Symbols that Unite, Gestures that Divide The final panel looked at how sport can both unite and divide through symbolic actions and political gestures.
The 6th Media Dialogue Forum brought together participants working together to promote dialogue and understanding. The media forum was characterised by open and insightful discussions on critical topics. At a time when disinformation is on the rise, the role of the media is becoming increasingly important. Freedom of the press is not only a fundamental right, but a cornerstone of democracy and an important pillar of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung's global work.
