Local Journalism: Shrinking Resources, Growing Challenges

Local news outlets have been decimated at an alarming rate, a trend turbocharged by the Covid-19 pandemic. And yet, during the public health crisis, local news outlets were essential to communities as important hubs of reliable information. Many journalists find themselves covering critical topics with fewer resources, including climate disasters. How is the local news crisis affecting coverage of the major issues of our time?

In a series of workshops, organized by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, experts discussed the impact on societies and citizens with an emphasis on local media coverage of climate change, the pandemic and public accountability of local governments. What are today's trends and possible solutions for the local news crisis? In this online discussion, experts will present some of the findings of the workshops.
