The 16th South China Sea International Conference

Navigating Narratives, Nurturing Norms

The 16th South China Sea International Conference, titled “Navigating Narratives, Nurturing Norms” was successfully held in Ha Long on October 23-24. This annual flagship event, supported by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Vietnam, brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss critical issues surrounding the South China Sea. The conference successfully fostered a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives on maritime security and regional cooperation. The emphasis on adhering to widely recognized principles and standards amidst global competition highlighted the conference’s commitment to ensuring international peace and providing a framework for peaceful dispute resolution.

This high-profile maritime event attracted more than 40 esteemed guests from 23 countries, with around 280 on-site attendees and over 200 participants joining online. The diverse participation and high-level discussions underscored the significance of collective efforts in addressing maritime challenges and promoting stability.

We were honored to bring German delegation to the conference: the renowned German security experts, Dr. Nico Lange from the Munich Security Conference and Dr. Sarah Kirchberger Academic Director at the Institute for Policy and Security, Kiel University (#ISPK) attended the conference as speakers. They contributed valuable insights on topics such as “Autonomous Vehicles in the Maritime Domain - Can AI Auto-Correct” and “Diplomacy, Defense or Deterrence: Which Path to Peace” exploring the potential of AI in maritime operations and various strategies for maintaining regional stability.

Maritime security is a key focus for Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung globally, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in critical regions. The participation of distinguished German security experts at the conference highlighted the importance of collaborative international efforts in addressing maritime security challenges.

By fostering dialogue and cooperation among regional and global stakeholders, KAS aims to contribute to the development of effective norms and strategies that ensure the safety and security of vital maritime routes, thereby supporting broader geopolitical stability and economic prosperity.

Partnering with the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam in this annual South China Sea Conference, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Vietnam is committed to the promotion of a rule-based order, regional integration and international cooperation.
