For the Alternative for Germany (AfD), 2024 brought success at the ballot box on the one hand, but also new challenges at state, federal and European level on the other. Recurring scandals, right-wing extremist tendencies and legal disputes surrounding the AfD are striking. The categorisation of the party or its branches by the various domestic intelligence services has been confirmed by the courts on several occasions and over 100 members of the Bundestag have filed an application for the Federal Constitutional Court to initiate proceedings to determine whether the party is unconstitutional.

The German climate debate is highly polarized and hardly convinces the conservative middle. The gap between aspiration and reality is too large. This conservative middle takes the climate problem seriously but feels patronized by state interventions. A new narrative is needed to reach this middle and win them over for effective and efficient climate policy. This conservative climate narrative is based on market-based, technology-open, and internationally oriented approaches, with emissions trading as the key instrument of climate policy.

Good Feelings, bad feelings

Representative survey on party images and feelings triggered by parties

Using a representative survey, the study analyses which political terms are associated with which parties. Furthermore, this study analyses which parties trigger certain feelings such as fear or outrage, but also trust and confidence. Both aspects of the perception of parties have already been analysed in previous surveys (2018 and 2020), meaning that a comparison over time is possible for some of the terms and feelings. This makes it possible to trace changes and constancy in party images in 2024.

Aligning growth and climate Protection

On the necessity of economic growth for successful climate protection

Contrary to what is often claimed, degrowth approaches do not lead to more climate protection. On the contrary: a deindustrialization of Germany or the European Union (EU) would significantly reduce the opportunities to contribute to climate protection. It is crucial for the success of the transformation that climate protection and economic growth go hand in hand. An effective climate policy can be achieved with the help of suitable framework conditions, in particular consistent carbon pricing, supportive government measures and, above all, international cooperation.

Research and Sources on Contemporary History

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.

Sociopolitical Series

Veröffentlicht wurden herausragende Dissertationsschriften mit gesellschaftspolitisch relevanten Themen von Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten der Begabtenförderung und Personen, die ihrem Promotionskolleg „Soziale Marktwirtschaft“ kooptiert sind.
