Pacific Islands Political Studies Association (PIPSA) Conference 2025

A two-day in-person conference running again for the first time since the pandemic.

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Australia) is pleased to support the 2025 Pacific Islands Political Studies Association’s (PIPSA) Conference this year. Scheduled to be held on 20/21 February at the Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, the in person conference is themed “The Pacific Islands: Zone of Peace or Ocean of Discontent?”, and features various expert speakers from all over the Pacific region. There will be numerous panel discussions and roundtables to discuss Pacific affairs, including the Changing Geopolitics in Oceania, Political Instability in the Pacific, and Environment, Conservation and Disaster Management.

KAS Panel Discussion followed by Networking Lunch - 4 April, 2024 - Wellington, NZ (this event is in English only)

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung – Regional Programme for Australia and the Pacific (KAS Australia) is pleased to support a panel discussion followed by a networking luncheon on 4 April 2024 in Wellington. Moderated by KAS Australia’s Director, Bertil Wenger, the panel discussion will be concerned with “Emerging Democracies in Africa and the Pacific – Challenges in A World of Turmoil” and feature high level speakers from those regions. The event will be held in the context of the IDU Forum scheduled to take place from 3 to 5 April 2024 in New Zealand’s capital.

German MP Volkmar Klein in Australia

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Australia) is pleased to welcome Volkmar Klein from the German Bundestag to Australia again. In Perth, the Member of the German Parliament had the opportunity to meet the former Minister for Defence, Senator Linda Reynolds, and the former Minister for the Public Service, Ben Morton, to discuss the implications of the German elections, the upcoming Australian elections, the recent meeting between US President Trump and the Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and related matters. A roundtable discussion in cooperation with the Perth USAsia Center provided the participants with the opportunity to discuss geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific, the implications for Germany and Europe of the US administration's decision to suspend any support of Ukraine, and other matters. The meetings were complemented by a luncheon discussion with the CEO of Neometals, Christopher Reed, and representatives of Moerk Water, a German company in Australia providing clean water to African countries and Pacific Island States. Further, the MP paid a visit to Hofmann Engineering's Australian headquarters, and was kindly offered a tour of their impressive production facilities. Day 2 in Perth concluded with a lively dinner discussion with the German Honorary Consul, Gabriele Maluga, and representatives from the business sector. Another highlight of his stay in Perth was the visit of the JHUB Maccabi Community Centre, where the MP learnt about the Center's history and current activities.

2024 IDU Forum Asia-Pacific

The Forum brought together policy makers, senior party officials, and thought leaders from its global membership and beyond.

Political Parties Shape Democracy - Workshops held by Dr Wilhelm Hofmeister

19/20 February 2024 in Apia AND 22/23 February 2024 in Suva, South Pacific

For the first time since the opening of its offices in Canberra, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Australia) has organised standalone workshops on the development of political parties in the Pacific region. Held by Dr Wilhelm Hofmeister, a Fellow and Lecturer of political sciences at the University of Duesseldorf, Germany, the 2-day workshops were titled “Political Parties Shape Democracy” and focussed on the prerequisites for running political parties and political projects.

Established in 1950 and operating under the auspices of UNESCO and of the International Science Council, IALS aims to promote the development of legal science throughout the world by using, in particular, the comparative method.

Samoa (post-Cotonou) Partnership Agreement

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Australia) had the pleasure to witness as an observer the Samoa (post-Cotonou) Agreement signing ceremony held on 15 November in Apia. The Agreement serves as an overarching legal framework for the European Union’s (EU) relations with the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) for the next twenty years.

9th KAS Australia-Europe Counter-Terrorism Dialogue

KAS Australia and the Pacific, in cooperation with the KAS offices in Brussels and Berlin, was pleased to be holding its 9th KAS Australia-Europe Counter-Terrorism Dialogue in October this year.

2nd KAS Australia and the Pacific Security Conference

'Zeitenwende' and Beyond

After a successful first iteration in 2022, we held the 2nd KAS Australia Security Conference on German-Indo-Pacific common security concerns on 12 and 13 September. The aim is to continue to grow the conference and establish it as an important platform for multilateral exchange on all matters defence, security and foreign policy. This year, KAS Australia and the Pacific was supported by the National Security College and the Australian Institute of International Affairs.
