Traditional communities and indigenous peoples are important protagonists in the climate debate, as they are not only more vulnerable to climate change, but also play an important role in facing the crisis, especially in terms of preserving the environment. Therefore, the second meeting of the Mandatos-C network: Legislative Leadership Alliance for Climate Action addressed how municipal parliamentarians can act in favor of traditional peoples, presenting the challenges and perspectives of these communities and their role in the environmental agenda.

The debate had the participation of Fran Pereira, representative of CONAQ - National Coordination for the Articulation of Quilombos, presenting the vision of quilombola communities in Brazil and how the discussion of the territory impacts the climate issue, and the indigenous communicator Pí Suruí, representative of the Kanindé Ethnoenvironmental Defense Association, addressing issues such as climate change and the need for indigenous representation within political spaces.

During the meeting, the specialists addressed issues such as territorial management as an action of intervention of public policies, the difficulties of land regularization, the problem of overlapping lands with large companies, in addition to the difficulties of accessing the rural environmental register and the invisibility of communities in the State system, making access to public policies difficult. In addition, the debate also addressed the importance of giving voice to these traditional communities and creating tools for them to have their rights met. Climate change disproportionately affects these traditional peoples, so the presence of representations and local leaders of these communities in spaces of power and decision-making is essential, in order to guarantee the construction of public policies that take into account their needs and present challenges.

The meeting promoted an important exchange of knowledge and several representatives participated in the online debate.
