Details

In February, students and teachers from Dar es Salaam were invited to discuss the new Tanzanian constitution. Since the voice of all Tanzanians shall be heard, the Civics Education Teachers’ Association (CETA) in cooperation with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Tanzania will host another symposium for students and teachers from the Zanzibar Islands in Unguja.

On 18th February 2014 the Constituent Assembly has started their meeting in Dodoma to discuss the second draft of the new Tanzanian Constitution. If the 641 members from civil society, Bunge and the Zanzibar House of Representatives reach an agreement within the prescribed period of 70 to a maximum of 110 days, the Tanzanian population will be called upon to legitimize the new constitution in a referendum on Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland.

To ensure that young citizens know their rights and responsibilities in this process and are able to make informed decisions, they shall have the opportunity to discuss with constitutional experts about constitutionalism itself and the content of the second draft of the constitution that is currently under debate in the constitutional assembly.

On the first day of the event, teachers from secondary schools from Zanzibar are invited to share and discuss their experiences with experts. They shall be supported to pass their gained knowledge to the students whose responsible and informed participation in the democratic process is vital for the future of the country.

The second day shall give room to students from secondary schools and universities to share their ideas, to comment and to seek clarification on the constitutional making process. Again, experts shall inform the new generation on their democratic rights and responsibilities during the constitutional debate, the registration process and the referendum itself.

Participation is on personal invitation only.
