In addition to participating in the World Health Summit Regional Meeting, the KAS USA Office hosted several side events on global health. These included a luncheon roundtable on "Global Health Policy as a Central Political Responsibility" organized in partnership with the Virchow Foundation for Global Health. Introductory statements were held by Ambassador Dr. John Nkengasong, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Health Diplomacy, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs Loyce Pace and Dr. Victor Dzau, President of the National Academy of Medicine. The discussion included other U.S. government representatives such as Dr. Howard Zucker, Deputy Director for Global Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Congressional staff, as well as European parliamentarians, scientists such as Prof. Dr. Kroemer, CEO of Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and civil society representatives. The closing remarks were held by Prof. Dr. Ganten, founder of the World Health Summit as well as co-founder of the Virchow Foundation for Global Health.
The KAS USA office also organized bilateral meetings with experts in the global health field. Among them was Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Vice Provost for Global Initiatives and Chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. At the renowned think tank Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), the delegation spoke with Stephen Morrison, Vice President and Director of CSIS' Global Health Policy Center. During a roundtable discussion, the delegation exchanged views with representatives of the private sector and the Global Health Council, led by its President and CEO Elisha Dunn-Georgiou.
Discussions were also held on the domestic political situation in the USA. The delegation received insights from the President of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), Jeff Rathke and his colleague Peter Rashish, Director of the Geoeconomics Program. The Republican Party (GOP) was the focus of discussions with Kodiak Hill-Davis, Vice President of Government Affairs at the Niskanen Center, and José Cunningham, RNC National Committeeman from Washington, DC. At the Hudson Institute, the delegation spoke with Matthew Boyse, Adjunct Fellow at the Center on Europe and Eurasia and former Deputy Assistant Secretary/Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
Ms. Andrea Ostheimer, Head of the New York Office of KAS, and Lukas Lingenthal, Global Health Officer at KAS Headquarters were also part of the delegation.
